Troubleshooting
T1. Why isn't the modem listed, the fax doesn't connect to the modem, or the system freezes?
If your system freezes when trying to fax, you have a conflict with your ports,. If your system indicates the modem is installed but the fax does not recognize the modem, you may have previously installed modems which take ports but the modems are no longer in use. These modem installations may not show up in the Devise Manager when accessed in Method I, and therefore, are not removed. You therefore will need to follow Method II for those modems to appear so you can delete them. Safe Mode lets you see all installed devices.
      For Win98 operating system:
      Method I
Step 1: Right Click on "My Computer".
      Step 2: Select "Properties".
      Step 3: Select "Device".
      Step 4: Select "Manager".
Step 5: Double click on "Modem" so your modem is listed underneath.
Step 6: Click on the modem listed to highlight it.
Step 7: Select the tab that says "Remove".
Step 8: Restart your computer. Your computer will plug and play your modem.
      Method II
Step 1: Restart your computer and press F8 while booting up. This will take you to a DOS menu.
      Step 2: Choose 'Safe Mode'.
Step 3: When Windows opens in Safe Mode, right click on my computer and select Properties.
      Step 4: Choose Device Manager.
Step 5: Double-click on the icon modem, then highlight and remove any modem(s) listed.
Step 6: Reboot your computer and let Win98 plug and play your modem.
If you have done the above and your modem still does not show up, then check to see that the modem is secure. Take you machine cover off and push on your modem to be sure it is seeded securely. Be sure your phone jack and line connections are OK. Disconnect and reconnect them. If that all checks out, you may have a faulty modem, or just the fax portion of the modem may be faulty where it still works for other devices or the Internet.
T2. Why does my mouse freeze every time I start FaxExpress?
Your modem and mouse are set on the same IRQ. Change your modem to another port. If this doesn't work, contact Microsoft to reset your ports.
T3. Why won't FaxExpress send a fax from another application?
The FaxExpress fax driver is automatically installed during the DataCom2000 installation process. If the driver does not appear in the Printers Folder, this may be due to the following:
1. Your ports may not be configured properly to accept more devices and communication drivers. Contact Microsoft for technical support to reconfigure your ports. Each computer differs and adjusting your system is beyond the scope of MultiSource's technical support. When the port configuration is correct, reinstall FaxExpress to allow the fax driver to install. If you don't want to contact Microsoft, you might try the following: temporarily remove your plug-and-play devices in the Device Manager (i.e. sound card, scanner, joy stick), install FaxExpress, then restart your computer so the plug-and-play devices reload. This will allow the Fax Driver to be installed first. Refer to your MicroSoft manual for directions on plug-and-play. In addition, remove other fax drivers using ports as follows: go to Start/Settings/Printers, highlight the fax driver you wish to remove, right click, then click on Properties, then click on the Details Tab. The first window should display the fax driver. If not, use the down arrow and find it. When displayed, select 'Delete Port'. Press OK. Delete the fax icon in the printer's folder. (Note: do not delete the fax icon before you delete the port.)
2. You have installed the program on a server and are trying to run FaxExpress from a client computer. This will not work. FaxExpress must be installed on an individual PC with a modem.
3. Your modem is not a 'fax' modem.
4. Another installed fax program may interfere.
T4. Why won't the fax send?
There are many factors that can affect a fax transmission:
In the Preferences form, a 'send date' or 'send time' is indicated, or the wrong date is indicated.
The modem is in use or not released from a prior application's connection.
Equipment readiness on the receivers end (fax not activated or a paper jamb).
Bad phone line connection.
Computer operating system conflicts.
Not selecting the fax driver in Printer Setup.
The sender, the person receiving the fax, or a third party lifting the phone receiver during the fax connection, or the receiver hanging up the phone prior to a fax connection.
User attempts to send and receive the fax on the same phone line (testing the fax).
User not following the FaxExpress 'Help' for proper procedure instructions. Any of these factors could cause a system error that requires the user to exit and re-enter FaxExpress or exit Windows completely to clear the error.
T5. Why won't my modem connect using a long distance phone number?
Make sure the fax number shown is in the same format as if you were to dial it from your phone, "1" + Area Code + Fax Number.
T6. What should I do if I get an error message?
These type of errors could be due to many different problems. If the errors start soon after installing new software, there could be a conflict or corrupt information in your registry. We suggest you obtain the free copy of 'regcln41.exe' (or the latest version) from Microsoft, which is intended to fix any registry problems, including corrupted and unused data. If you get a General Protection Fault error, this may be due to low resources. Restart your computer.
T7. Why does the program freeze when I select an Atomic Clock?
If the program freezes and displays the hourglass, this means that the atomic clock web site you are attempting to access is down. If the adjusted time does not appear within 15 seconds, you can press ctrl-alt-delete or wait for a message box to appear, then select a different atomic clock.
T8. Why do I get the following error message?
This error is a system error not a FaxExpress error. Previous to installing FaxExpress, another software program was installed which replaced or deleted two key Windows System files: 'iconlib.dll' and 'unidrv.dll'. Install the latest DataCom2000 Update to restore these files.
If the error persists, restore these files from the Windows95 or Windows98 setup disks as follows:
For Windows95:
1. Go into your windows\system directory and delete 'iconlib.dll' and 'unidrv.dll'.
2. Re-install Windows95 to restore these two files. (You do not need to uninstall Windows95.)
3. Reinstall DataCom2000 to automatically load the fax driver.
For Windows98:
1. Go to the 'Start' Menu, then select the 'Accessories' menu.
2. Select the 'System Tools' Menu, then selec the 'System Information' menu.
3. Select 'Tools' from the menu bar, then select 'System File Checker'.
4. Insert your Windows98 CD into your CD drive, then select the option 'Scan for altered files'.
5. Press the start button.
6. When 'iconlib.dll' appears as the altered file, click the option 'Extract one file from installation disk'.
7. In the text box type 'iconlib.dll' file (no quotes around the file name), then press the start button.
8. When the 'Extract Files' Screen appears, press the upper 'Browse' button.
9. When 'Browse For Folder' appears, double-click your Windows98 CD Drive in the list box.
10. Highlight the 'Win98' folder and press the 'OK' button to display the 'Extract File' Screen
11. If a 'Back-up' screen appears , press the 'Skip' button.
12. On the 'Extract File' Screen, press the 'OK' button to restore your 'iconlib.dll' file.
13. Repeat this procedure for the 'unidrv.dll' file.
14. Reinstall DataCom2000 to automatically load the fax driver.
For WindowsNT 4.0 or higher:
1. Re-install WindowsNT 4.0, Service Pack 3 or higher to restore missing driver files.
2. Reinstall DataCom2000 to automatically load the fax driver.
T9. When using the network, why can't I locate the Manager Group?
Be sure your network drive is mapped. Refer to the Windows help for Network mapping instructions.
T10. What is preventing the Fax Driver from installing?
If other fax programs have been installed prior to installing DataCom2000, another fax driver may have been installed. Delete any unused fax drivers from the Printers folder. If there is a driver named "Fax Driver", delete this driver prior to installing DataCom2000.
T11. What do I do if the fax transmission is interrupted?
When you activate to send a fax, the command is automatically entered into the ‘Pending’ fax log. If you create an error or the fax is intrupted in the phone line, you have to delete the pending fax awaiting to be sent from the Pending log file to resend the same fax or a subsequent fax. You also have to go out of the fax program to clear the system error, and possibly reboot computer if that didn’t clear the error. You will find the Pending Log in the top menu bar under Log. Once you have done that, the fax program should work fine. If the error occurs again, then you are probably not following the correct procedure. When you send a fax and the transmission is interrupted, the fax program may try to resume sending the fax when it is activated again if the pending log is not cleared. To stop the faxing operation, select and close the blue ‘world’ icon in the lower right corner of status bar to stop the transmission. Then delete the pending fax from the log. If the pending fax that received the error is not removed, that pending fax will continue to send and you will be unsuccessful due to the error.
Help Tips
H1. How do I fax a document from another application?
When faxing a document from another application, open the document first and then select the print setup and the "Fax Driver". Then select the print command and FaxExpress will run.
H2. How do I prevent my answering machine from interfering with my fax?
You can not have two communication applications or devices active simultaneously on the same phone line. When FaxExpress is in the receive mode, it is ready to recognize a fax tone and accepts the fax transmission. To use both on the same phone line, you need to get an automatic switch that recognizes the difference between a voice and fax signal. You can get one at an office supply store, or you can turn off your answereing machine when you are expecting a fax.
H3. How do I enter the fax number to send a document?
The phone number entered in the fax record must be in the same format as if manually dialed. If the number is a local call, no access numbers are required. If the number required access codes to dial, all access codes have to be included with the number in the record. Enter the complete fax number in the FaxExpress recipient Fax text box including all prefixes for area codes and international calling.
Local Number Example: 555-1212, Long Distance Example: 1 (999) 555-1212, International Example: 001 (33) 5511 3366
H4. How do I get Palm Pilot to release the modem?
PalmPilot does not release the modem for other uses and requires a patch from 3Com.
On PalmPilot's 'support' page for users who cannot access modem port after exiting HotSync Manager. This problem occurs when Hotsync Manager is set for Modem. If you exit Hotsync Manager by double-clicking on the system tray icon and choosing Exit, HotSync Manager is actually still loaded even though the HotSync icon disappears from the system tray. This prevents you from accessing the modem port from any other application. If you are experiencing this problem, try using Ctrl-Alt-Del to bring up the Close Program and shut down the communications port. This must be done twice for it to work.
H5. How do I run FaxExpress while connected to the internet?
A fax program will not share a modem during use. If you are connected to the Internet, running FaxExpress on the same port will cause an error.
H6. How do I improve the fax quality or increase the DPI?
Currently the DPI is set to 200 so it can be viewed by all fax machines. To increase fax output quality, make sure the printer properties for the print driver are set to high resolution. If using Word 97, there is a compatibility option under tools and options that states 'use printer metrics to layout document'. Make sure this option is checked.
H7. How do I create my own fax cover sheet and not use the cover provided?
You can create your own cover sheet from your word processor and attach it to the other documents you are faxing. To do this, create the cover sheet in your word processor. From your word processor, click on the printer setup to make sure the 'Fax Driver' is your default printer (the fax will be activated when the print button is clicked). When FaxExpress appears, select "Add File To Send File List..." from the Fax menu, locate and select the cover sheet file you have created. Make sure you add the cover sheet document before adding the other documents to the send file list so the fax recipient will receive the fax documents in the correct order. When you send the fax, you will be then prompted to "Add a cover sheet?" - select the "No" button to prevent one of FaxExpress's built in cover sheets from being sent in addition to your own cover sheet.
H8. How do I fax a scanned document?
First be sure FaxExpress is working properly by faxing a document from your word processor, be sure your scanner is fully operational, and be sure you can scan a document into your word processor with your scanner software. When you scan a document, you can send it to a word processor or you can save it as a bitmap. To fax a bitmap from FaxExpress, find and select the bitmap file so it appears in the Send File List, then send it.
To scan a text document and then fax the document:
1. Scan a document and send it to MS Word, or another word processor.
2. Open MS Word, go to File/Scan to bring the document into Word.
3. Select File/Print/Setup and select the fax driver to open FaxExpress.
4. Fill in or select the recipient and follow through with sending a fax.
Another option would be to select Scan from the FaxExpress menu, then the Scan Text button. Then follow the steps 3 and 4 above. (The first time you do this you will have to choose your word processor .exe from your dialog box.)
H9. How do I get DataCom2000 to run faster?
The speed depends on a combination of factors such as the speed of your processor, the number of databases and records created, the number of DataCom2000 modules and other applications open at the same time, and the system maintenance of periodically clearing temp files, recycle bins, caches, excessive cookies, and running Scandisk. The amount of speed required depends on one's level of comfort while running a computer. A faster processor, more RAM, and more memory in the VGA card is generally the solution to gain greater speed.
Routine Computer System Maintenance for Better Performance
Remove temporary files, cache directory files, and excessive cookies. Do a search to determine locations where temp (*.tmp) files may be stored. Possibilities are:
DOS directory
c:\windows\temp
c:\temp
Recycle Bin
Internet browser cache subdirectory (i.e. Netscape\users\services\cache subdirectory)
Windows\Cookies
Windows98: System Tools\Disk Cleanup will automatically scan for temp files.
Compact your DataCom2000 databases
Run Scandisk routinely, generally found in Programs\Accessories\System Tools.
H10. How do I save my data and where is it stored?
The following are locations that may have data stored to backup (assuming DataCom was installed in the 'c:\datacom' directory). Be sure to backup files and their subdirectory folders since many files have the same name, and the folders differentiate the databases.
c:\datacom\contact\*.mdb files
c:\datacom\business\*.mdb files
c:\datacom\filecab\*.mdb files
c:\datacom\planner.mdb
c:\datacom\(user created).mdb
c:\datacom\fax\(fax database)
c:\datacom\faxin\(received faxes)
c:\datacom\faxout\(saved faxes)
c:\datacom\pictures\(saved images)
c:\windows\dcdialer.ini
c:\windows\dcunicom.ini
H11. How do I Use the MultiWeb Viewer?
The MultiWeb Viewer enables users to organize related websites into groups of up to 20 websites each. A group's websites are opened simultaneously and are instantly viewed by selecting their associated tab rather than the typical delayed single page loading sequence.
Specific uses may include:
1. Organizing important, related, or often used websites in groups for individual use.
2. Preset Internet/Intranet websites can restrict use to employees on a network or on individually.
3. Corporate and government intranet networks can provide on-line internal documentation, policies, reports, procedures, tutorials, notices, and other employee information to their work force.

Caution: Your 'Custom Template' is saved in a database called 'default.mdb' in the DataCom folder. If for some reason you decide to create an update of DataCom (downloaded from the Helpdesk), this default.mdb will be renamed to default1.mdb and a new default.mdb will be added to the DataCom folder. The reason for this is that we may add more templates as 3rd party programs become updated. If this occurs, your 'Custom Template' will now be in the 'default1.mdb' file.
To use your original template, rename 'default.mdb' to 'newdefault.mdb' and rename the 'default1.mdb' back to 'default.mdb', then run the transfer.

35. The data has been transfered from the 'ABC.txt' to 'custom.mdb'.
36. Go into FaxExpress, select 'File/Open' and locate the 'custom.mdb' file. FaxExpress will display the new records.
Caution: Your 'Custom Template' is saved in a database called 'default.mdb' in your FaxExpress folder.
Importing records once a custom template has been created:
1. Run the 'Sync Data Wizard'.
2. Click on the 'Custom' button.
3. From the Sync Data menu, click 'File/Open Template'.
4. When the 'Open' form appears, select 'Custom Template' from the list, press the 'OK' button.
5. When the 'Custom Template' appears, click the 'Import' button.
6. When the 'Transfer' form appears, with 'Custom Template' appearing in the drop-down box, press the start button.
H15. How do I stop fax broadcasting and prevent it from auto starting later?
Once fax broadcasting has begun, it is designed to not be interrupted. If there is an invalid fax number, or a fax paper jam on the other end of the fax, the fax broadcasting function will automatically continue to the next number and not shut down. To stop fax broadcasting you must shut it down manually. To do this, go to the Window's status bar. On the right side is a 'blue earth' icon which is the fax manager. Right-click on this icon and select 'Close' from the menu. This will stop the current fax operation. When you go back into the fax program, the broadcasting will resume where you left off. If you want to cancel the remainder of the fax list from being broadcast automatically, go to the main fax form, select 'Log/Delete All Files' from the menu. Since you went into the 'Pending Faxes' form, auto broadcasting will resume. After selecting 'Log/Delete All Files' from the menu, go to the Windows status bar, right-click on the 'blue earth' Fax Manager icon, and select 'Close' from the pop-up menu to stop the fax operation. Once the Pending Log list is clear, the fax broadcasting will not automatically restart.
H16. How do I stop a fax that automatically starts transmitting when I open the fax program?
When you send a fax and the transmission is interrupted creating an error, the fax program may try to resume sending the fax when it is activated again because that fax is in the Pending log. To stop the faxing operation, select the blue ‘world’ ball in the lower right corner of the status bar to stop the transmission. Then delete the pending fax from the Pending Log. To clear the Pendind Log, select Logs/Pending from the top menubar. If the pending fax that received the error is not removed, that pending fax will continue to send and you will be unsuccessful due to the error that was previously created. To clear the system error, close and reopen the fax program. If that didn’t clear the error, reboot your computer to clear the error.
H17. How do I reconfigure my ports in Windows98?
To reconfigure your ports, right click on My Computer, go to Properties/Devise Manager/Modem. Highlight the modem and press Remove. Then back out of your computer and startup your computer again. Your modem will reinstall and should plug and play to reconfigure your modem. This should work unless your modem doesn't allow plug & play.
